Project Ideas

So what we need are suggestions as to what kinds of thing we want to change in CP. It would wise to start posting any ideas for projects we have now so that when summer hits we can organize, prioritize, and make a difference!

Feel free to list anything from local compost sites to town legislature proposals. We'll use this platform to work out the steps to make 'em happen.

-get people in our neighborhoods to plant native trees
-teach people how to compost in their backyard so they can recycle their organic waste
-pick up litter (not the most thrilling suggestion, but sometimes it needs to be done)
-encourage the use of reusable bags and try to get stores to give incentives for customers (such as giving a 10 cent credit to the bill)
-I've heard Hannaford already sells recycled paper products, but does Price Chopper?
-encourage Shen not to use pesticides on the lawns during the summer

Does anyone have any other ideas?

-Shona

We could
-talk to schools/markets about connecting with area farms in an attempt to use more local foods or at least encourage people to purchase more locally grown foods
-curate an art show in a community area (library, community center, senior citizens' place in the Commons, etc) that emphasizes some aspect of keeping things green(er)
-get people to stop watering their lawns
-get kids involved with gardening
-do we have a CSA in/near Clifton Park? we could become involved with that and encourage others to as well

encourage people to reuse plastic bags from home to use for grocery shopping.

sponsor environmental awareness events at the library (ie. showing of an inconvenient truth)

ride bikes and post flyers (on recycled paper) encouraging bike riding

This may be a little much, but last I knew, Clifton Park only recycled type 1 and 2 plastic. It'd be great if we could encourage them to accept the other types (out here in Ithaca they just passed a measure to do so last Spring!). I'm not sure how we'd go about doing this though, but it'd be nice to get people thinking about it at least.

I'm definitely interested in picking up litter; I've been wanting to do that for a while. Maybe we could have a day after August 10 (when I'm home)? :)

Does Shen use post-consumer paper? If not, we could encourage that they make this mandatory. I think Mr. Klaussen was working on this a few years ago.

Organize a community birdhouse-making class.

Send around fliers that encourage people to buy wind power through NYSERDA OR NYPIRG (I can't remember who it was, but we had a spokeswoman from one of these groups come in on Earth Day 2005 and talk about it). It's surprisingly easy to do, and I'd imagine that a lot of people simply aren't aware that they choose to buy wind-generated power off of the regular grid.

Are there invasive plant species that are causing a lot of damage in CP? We could organize a removal day.

In Wheaton, IL we recycle plastics 1-7. I don't know how to go about implementing that in CP but it's a good idea.

Maybe we could advocate for making home gardens (e.g. vegetable).

Having Shen use post-consumer paper is a good idea. Could we extend this to local offices and businesses?

Other ideas: advocate (via fliers, events) using lower-energy light bulbs, more recycling of electronics/batteries, donating (vs. throwing out) old items that can still be used by others.

Shona, Mariam forwarded this to me, you have a marvelous start that I think that we could use this event to help build on - I've been brainstorming something along the lines of "Stewards of S. Saratoga" and making a website, and having a sign up list at the library -this event includes Halfmoon too, and of course we've connected bio-systems. As far as actual involvement - it would probably add to a mailing list with very few active people but it could be done, and info. would have a farther reach. Please get my E Mail address from Mariam, and send me your thoughts. Lisa B.
